Alexis Mersmann (DE) is a critical fashion practitioner and costume designer whose work explores how garments, costumes, and textiles can help us rethink the relationships between people and their environment. Rooted in a working-class background and trained as a bespoke tailor in Hamburg, Alexis combines craft knowledge with a critical engagement in the social potential of clothing and costume. Through methods such as upcycling, embroidery, and mask-making, their work communicates values of care, resilience, and interconnectedness. After completing a BA in Fashion Design at HTW Berlin, Alexis recently graduated from the MA programme Critical Fashion Practices at ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem. They have collaborated on theatre and performance productions with Olympia Bukkakis, Yotam Peled, Leute Wie Die*, and Theater Strahl, as well as on film projects by Shu Lea Cheang.
